Your Surgery

Before Your Surgery

  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Do not eat or drink after midnight prior to arriving at center. This includes water and chewing gum.
There are a few special considerations to this guideline. Please call to speak to a pre-op nurse if
    you have concerns.
  • Bathe and shower on the morning of your procedure to minimize the risk of infection.
  • Brush your teeth on the morning of procedure but do not swallow any water.
  • Do not consume alcohol 24 hours prior to your surgery. Refrain from smoking 12 hours prior to
your procedure. These substances can cause you to have adverse reactions to anesthesia and medications.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing and low-heeled shoes.
  • Leave jewelry and valuables at home except what is needed to take care of any financial obligations
    you may have.
  • Contact Lenses may not be worn during the procedure. Either leave them at home or bring a case
    for their safekeeping.
  • For your comfort we suggest you wear minimal to no makeup.
  • Unusual changes should be reported immediately to your physician, even if the changes seem minor,
such as fever, cough, rash or a cold. Please notify your physician if there is a possibility that you
    are pregnant.
  • Arrive on time so that your procedure may begin as scheduled.

Day of Surgery

The safety and comfort of our patients is our number one concern. You will be called by our nursing staff prior to your surgery to complete a health questionnaire and review your instructions. In addition, our nursing staff will visit with you the day of your surgery to ensure any questions or concerns are addressed. Your surgeon and anesthesiologist will also visit with you before your procedure and we encourage you to use this time with

  • Please arrive on time so that your procedure may begin as scheduled. You will be notified of the time of arrival for your surgery when the nurse calls you to obtain a brief medical history and review the pre-operative instructions. Ensure your transportation home has been arranged.
  • Upon arrival you will check in with the front desk and complete your registration. It is important that you bring your insurance card and drivers license the day of surgery.
  • Your family will be asked to wait in the lobby and the surgeon will speak with them immediately following surgery.
  • A nurse will escort you to the pre-operative area where you will change into a patient gown. In the pre-operative area you will be prepared for your surgery and visited by your surgeon.

After Surgery

After your procedure, you will be moved to the post-operative recovery area where our staff will care for you until you are awake and comfortable. It is not unusual for you to feel a little sleepy or lightheaded for several hours following your procedure. Before you leave the facility, you will be given instructions for your care at home and you will be discharged as soon as your condition is stable. After you have returned home, be sure and follow your doctor's orders regarding diet, rest, medication, and activity. A nurse will be calling you one to two business days after your surgery to check on your recovery. You will also be given a patient satisfaction survey to complete and return.

For your well-being, we recommend you wait at least 24 hours before you:

  • Drive or use power equipment
  • Eat a heavy meal
  • Consume alcoholic beverages
  • Take medication not approved by your physician
  • Sign important papers or make significant decisions
